One words on why I enjoyed this version of Cinderella: story. This story, while being familiar, is entirely its own. And it was wonderful to have that.

First off, Oona, our Cinderella, grows up with a foster mother, Brigid, so she has a happy childhood. It isn't until her father recalls her to court that things go downhill for her. BUT, then she gets dad to bring her foster mother (and her son) to court, so it gets a wee bit better! And, foster mother's son Cormac, basically operates as a little brother determined to see his big sis happy. And that's cute. Mother Brigid turns out to have a bit of magic about her.

Oh, and that the prince only sees Oona as she rides by the church because her sisters won't let her go. (Because why would they be nice to her, right? She's only their baby sister.) Or that, when he finally snags one of her shoes as she rides away, he spends a year searching for her, angering the king because said prince is betrothed to the eldest sister, Sorcha. (Sidenote: Can we get an amen that at least once in a while the sisters/stepsisters get names?)

When her sisters stuff her into a chest, it is Cormac who leads the prince to her. While middle sister Deirdra comes around, scorned Sorcha is having none of this happily ever after. After the wedding, a few years pass and the prince has to go to war and Oona hears nothing of him. Sorcha asks to come visit and, against Cormac's judgment, Oona agrees. Only Cormac sees Sorcha shove Oona into the sea from a cliff and it is Cormac who tells all to the prince. Granted the prince does realize Sorcha isn't Oona (three years of mumbling about in a cloak does make it easy to impersonate one's sister to the castle staff, after all). The titular cloak comes into play when Brigid gives it to Cormac to find the prince and save Oona.

Which they do, but here's the thing, while this is in very many ways a Cinderella story, it goes outside and beyond it. The central figure shifts around, there's other events, time passing. It's just a really enjoyable story. More and more I'm beginning to believe that if I find a fairy or folk tale and something on it says "Irish in origin," I know I'm in for a good tale.
